Please read silently while I read this aloud

So this week was testing week for the kids. They have never had the joy of experiencing standardized testing....until now. I don't know about all of you, but I really did love standardized testing week when I was in school. Nerdy, I know. I looked forward to the challenge and also loved that the whole school was so calm and quiet. Even with the exams I took to become a certified teacher, the excitement came flooding back. The team here in Kenya loves to work out. I, however, do not. I told them all that I would rather take 100 standardized tests than do crossfit. It's good to be reminded that God made us all different with different passions and different talents and gifts. :) Guess I'll stick to teaching.

ANYWAY, so this week was "silence on the compound."
Each day we started with a verse of the day and a note of encouragement together. I had to test the kids in three different groups, so it took all day. The kids were super troopers and worked hard on their other schoolwork while the other groups were testing. They're all so close to finishing all of their stuff! They want to be finished so badly. We began the school year thinking that we were going to squeeze in two school years before November, so with the change of plans (only doing one year of school and putting the kids in public school in Arkansas next year), the kids were ahead before we went back to the States. Now they are all a little ahead and will probably finish their work before the last day of school (May 22). During testing, while I was sitting in the room watching them take tests, I was able to start cleaning some things out. It's hard not knowing what I'm going to be doing over the next few years. I know that I will be in Bossier next year, but I'm not sure whether or not I will be coming back to Kenya the following year. I was separating things into "take back" and "leave here" piles. It was a good time of reflecting. While I don't know what the future holds, I'm going to do what I can one day at a time to serve the Lord with gladness. Doors may open and close, but it's all in His hands.

After testing free-time

It was also Teacher Appreciation Week. Each day Kenya gave me a little gift and the kids gave me cards. She truly understands me because my gifts were the nerdiest ones I had ever seen. Sadly, the coffee mug she made me was washed, and the awesomely nerdy design came off......before I even got to take a picture of it. On Friday, she took all the teachers out for a teacher appreciation luncheon. Kenya, Lindsey (PE teacher), Getrude (Swahili teacher), and I had a wonderful lunch and lost track of time, staying for 3 hours at the restaurant.

And since it's Mother's Day tomorrow, I would like to send a shout out to the first mother I've ever known and the newest mother I know. Thanks, Mom, for always being there no matter what. Whether it was to bring me the homework I left on the counter, bring me my danceline bag, bring me my lunch, bring cupcakes for my students, or write my checks while I'm gone, you do it selflessly. I love you more than I can possibly ever convey to you. And to the newest mommy in our family....I am so excited for this new chapter in y'all's life! I don't think you could have made a more beautiful baby. Thanks for giving her dimples and facial expressions like her Auntie Ashley. I love you tons! Happy Mothers' Day to you both!
Technology is great to hang out with family 10,000 miles away

Yep...we share at least some genetics...

James, Clayton, and John left on Thursday to drive to Nairobi to pick up the mission team for the trip to the North. Please join me in praying for all of them. They've dealt with car trouble, pick pocketers, and the canceling of their rafting trip. They will be going to church tomorrow in the slums and then will be driving Monday to visit some new areas. Please pray that God's will is done on this trip and that He keeps them safe on their travels. Pray for hearts to be opened to the Gospel and for clear direction for the next phase of this ministry in Kenya.

Also, Brother Lynn Raburn taught another lesson on Hebrews at the Bible Institute today. His study is being recorded for future use, and he is doing a wonderful job. Continue to pray for Lynn and Brenda as they are here with us that God uses them in mighty ways.

 2 weeks left of school
11 weeks left in Kenya

Thank you everyone for praying! I love you all!

In Christ,
Ashley

Ps: If you are close enough, go hug your mom. Or better yet, if you are close enough, go hug MY mom for me. :)
